A knotty pine in Japan begs the question: how old is it? With trees one can cut them down and count rings, though it is often frowned upon by their owners (one would assume) and the local population. This one seems kind of old—older than some of the nearby temples that, while look like period pieces, are often rebuilt frequently due to decay and fires. They are after all made of wood.
