Homage to Catalonia
Homage to Catalonia begins with Orwell's arrival in Barcelona in 1936, shortly after the outbreak of the civil war. He joins the Workers' Party of Marxist Unification (POUM). The POUM is a revolutionary socialist group, which became actively involved in the fight against Franco's forces.
Orwell vividly describes the atmosphere of revolutionary Catalonia, highlighting the grassroots efforts to create a more egalitarian society. He depicts the collectivization of industries and the establishment of worker-controlled organizations. However, he also provides a candid portrayal of the internal conflicts and power struggles within the Republican camp. Such tensions include those between various left-wing factions.
As Orwell becomes more entrenched in the war effort, he participates in several battles and skirmishes. He recounts experiences on the front lines. Orwell portrays the harsh conditions and constant threat of death.
Homage to Catalonia takes a dramatic turn when Orwell and comrades are caught up in the May Days of 1937. The violent clash between various factions within the Republican forces results in chaos. Orwell recounts the confusion of the street fighting and subsequent crackdown on the POUM.
